Initially listening to this song, I interpreted it as simply a great feel good song, with a great groove and melody, but coming back to it, the lyrics seem much more layered than what appears at the surface. Reading the lyrics, I personally get kind of a Dylan-esque, ‘A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall’ story. Paul Weller (lead singer/songwriter) sets a simple scene appearing to be simply about aging, and accepting whatever will be. However, nearer to the end a darker shadow is cast over the scene, with phrases like “Evil turns to statues, and masses form a line” and “I wish we’d come to our senses and see there is no truth.” I can’t say for sure what it means, because I don’t know, but whatever the case may be, the song work both at the surface as a great, cheerful song, as well as with further analysis into the lyrical structure. I love songs like that.
