Jeff Tweedy (lead singer/songwriter) knows a thing or two about addiction, and this is his grand statement on addiction, boredom, and songwriting itself. The song is very reminiscent of early Velvet Underground songs like ‘Heroin’ or ‘I’m Waiting for the Man.’ ‘Handshake Drugs’ doesn’t work at all as a casual listen and seems to absorb all of the listener’s attention right from the get-go. Overall, like a lot of the Velvet Underground and the Stooges work it’s really tough to listen to, but once you put it on, it’s pretty damn rewarding, and humbling.
