It already says a lot that this is how the Godmother of Punk decides to open her debut album. The same way the first snare hit that opens ‘Like a Rolling Stone’ changed the world of music forever, the opening lines of Gloria kicked open the door to a new revolution, holding nothing back: “Jesus died for somebody’s sins, but not mine.” This song is Patti Smith at her vocal finest, sounding both profoundly beautiful and dirty as hell in the same breath. As usual her backing band sounds fantastic throughout, with constantly evolving rhythms and dynamics the song never goes stale. It cannot be overstated how important this song is to the world of punk and the world of music altogether. That is why it is today’s SOTD
