Normally, I dislike songs that sound like they are trying to appeal to too many genres, as Kurt Vonnegut once wrote “If you open a window and make love to the world, so to speak, your story will get pneumonia,” but this song is different. It naturally moves from subtle indie rock grooves to post-punk guitar jams to quiet gentle piano based ballads and back, all in the span of less than 3 minutes. I really enjoy how much is packed into this song, not a single second seems like filler and that is one of my most important criteria for great music. While I really enjoy all of their more popular single i.e. ‘Float On’ and ‘Lampshades on Fire,’ Modest Mouse definitely deserves more attention for their lesser known work, and this song is a great jumping off point into the crazy, fuzz-folk world of Modest Mouse. It’s for that reason, mainly, that this is today’s SOTD
