For a while I was stuck as simply an early R.E.M. purist, listening almost solely to their first 4 albums (Murmur-Life’s Rich Pageant) for most of my life. Recently however, I read an interview with Michael Stipe (lead singer/songwriter) talking about the 20th anniversary of this album and about how it was possibly his favourite of the R.E.M. catalogue. Having read this, I had to check it out and I discovered that it was equally one of my favourites. It is essentially both a return to the DIY-sounding innovation of Murmur and Reckoning, as well as the more muscular, edgier sound they explored in Monster and Green. This combination meets perfectly in ‘The Wake-Up Bomb,’ a stellar track in the R.E.M. catalogue and today’s SOTD.
