This song, and this album (Axis: Bold as Love) are where Jimi Hendrix truly came into his own, as a songwriter. In Castles, he weaves together three different stories, and with the title line, talks about the fleeting nature of love, fame, and life itself. Pretty heavy stuff. The guitar on this track flows and slips in and out, always leaving to early, instrumentally adding to the theme of the song as it fades, and slips away. Just overall a beautiful song, and a great step forward in Hendrix’s songwriting.
