Car reliability rankings are issued by consumer publications and industry organisations each year. These ratings, based on detailed research and vehicle owner feedback, provide a strong indication of the amount you’re likely to spend on repairs — a key element in determining what the total cost of ownership will be. Most importantly, car reliability ratings can help determine the best options for buying and make a more informed purchasing decision. Current reliability ratings There are two major reliability reports in the auto industry: the annual brand reliability rankings for autos and J.D. Power’s U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study. Consumer Reports The Consumer Reports annual ranking of the brand’s reliability is designed to demonstrate how well cars perform over time and provide details about the likelihood that an owner may be impacted by problems or repairs that are required. The annual ranking provides a predicted reliability score for each car, which is determined on a scale of the zeros to 100 points. The mean score of a vehicle in the annual report generally is between 41 to 60 points. To be considered a top contender, Consumer Reports must have survey data from two or more models. The most recent ranking issued in Consumer Reports from February 2022 featured Asian car makers at the head of this group by large margin. Asian automobiles are rated with an overall reliability score of 62, while vehicles that are made by European manufacturers are in a distant second place with an overall average of 44. Domestic car brands finish in last place with an average score of 42. The top five reliable companies of 2022’s Consumer Reports ranking are: Subaru Mazda BMW Honda Lexus If ranked by type of car by itself (cars versus SUVs, versus pickups and minivans — cars are found to be most trustworthy in general. Their average reliability rating is around 57. SUVs rank second having an average of fifty. Minivans and pickups are tied for last , with an average score of 43. However, when it comes to domestic cars, the rankings show the pickups and SUVs are more efficient in scoring 45 and 41, respectively. Domestic cars score lower at just 38. J.D. Power Now in its 33rd year, J.D. Power’s 2022 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study measures problems that owners have experienced with their three-year-old cars. The study examines the causes of problems in an extensive list of categories, including Exterior driving experience features, controls and displays (FCD) Driving assistance Infotainment Seats Climate Interior Powertrain The J.D. Power study was recently redesigned to encompass all of the technologies and features that are accessible in the latest vehicles. It now covers a few new areas of concern and offers new information on customer expectations regarding deterioration, vehicle appeal and software updates. The resigned J.D. Power’s study also reveals the degree to which customers are satisfied that their cars have stood the test of time, in terms of degradation and aesthetics. In addition, it examines the way that a car’s features are performing three years after purchase. The report includes the score of a car’s dependability, which is dependent on the amount of issues reported per 100 vehicles or PP100. Based on this measure the top five reliable vehicle brands included in the report for 2022 include: Kia Buick Hyundai Toyota Dodge Do not overlook looking at safety ratings. To get a complete image of a car’s security and reliability, take a look at the safety ratings of vehicles published annually from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), an independent, non-profit research and education organization. The IIHS’s mission is to reduce deaths, injuries or property harm caused by car crashes. As part of this mission, it conducts and publishes studies on the safety of vehicles. Each year the organization announces the Best Safety Pick which is the cars that perform best in evaluations. The Top Safety Pick has been issued since the 2006 model year. The IIHS also has been releasing Top Safety Pick+ awards from 2013. These awards seek to determine the best vehicle choices annually for safety in various size categories including small, medium-sized, luxury, large, large and small luxury SUVs midsize midsize luxury SUVs, large SUVs, minivans and small and large pickup trucks. A few of the vehicles that are awarded the top Safety Pick+ or Top Safety Pick award in 2022 include: Small cars Honda Civic hatchback and sedan Honda Insight sedan Hyundai Elantra sedan Kia Soul wagon Mazda 3 hatchback and sedan midsize automobiles Honda Accord sedan Hyundai Sonata sedan Kia K5 sedan Nissan Altima sedan Nissan Maxima sedan Small vehicles Buick Encore GX Chevrolet Trailblazer Ford Bronco Sport Ford Escape Honda CR-V Midsize SUVs Ford Edge Ford Explorer Ford Mustang Mach-E Hyundai Palisade Hyundai Santa Fe The main point is that purchasing cars is an enormous cost, both in the beginning and over the course of the many years. Doing your research before making such a purchase is essential. Do some research on reliability ratings from trusted organizations to save money as well as save yourself from unnecessary repairs in the long haul. Learn more about
